Today’s Guest:

In the lead up to Nudgestock 2021, it was pleasure having Rory Sutherland on the show for the second time.

Rory is the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy in the UK, an attractively vague job title that has allowed him to co-found a behavioral science practice within the agency. He works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour – these are the very small contextual changes which can have enormous effects on the decisions people make. Rory is the author of Alchemy: The Dark Art and Curious Science of Creating Magic in Brands, Business, and Life.

Some things we covered:

  • Why Amazon is Soviet.
  • Alchemy during Covid.
  • Data and decision-making with incomplete information.
  • Richard Feynman.
  • “Drive-by” Science.
  • David Ogilivy and direct marketing as randomized control trial.
  • Why an agency’s value still lives in the creative department.
  • The value of benign bullshit.
  • Nudgestock 2021 – Ogilvy’s upcoming June 11th digital symposium featuring John Cleese, Daniel Kahneman, and Shahzeen Attari among others. Click here to reserve your spot.
